Our clients are delighted that we have achieved planning for their net zero, straw-bale extension (with green roof) to be added to their thatched, grade 2 listed building.

“A massive thanks to the absolutely brilliant Architect Phillip. Without his incredible forward thinking concept and calm approach we’d never have reached this epic part of the journey” - Gary & Rachael.

Straw bale houses are a cost effective, low energy form of construction. For this project, the straw will be provided from a local farm.

The are many advantages of straw bale construction, It’s:

  • Carbon negative (and compostable at the end of its life)

  • Extremely low-cost

  • Fireproof (tightly packed to resist flames)

  • A natural Insulator (Approx. U-value of 0.1w/m2K)

  • Load bearing (able to provide structural support)

Benefits also include:

  • Materials readily available (UK surplus straw is plentiful enough to build 600,000 homes a year) - Conventional houses require approx. 1500 blocks & 76,000 bricks. The equivalent in straw would be 175 bales

  • Longevity (lasting over 200 years)

  • Simple construction technique (you can do it yourself)

  • No issues with rot (providing you keep them dry during construction) and no greater risk of pests (same as any other house)
